| election research assists in defeat of alabama tax Election Research Assists in Defeat of Alabama Tax Using High-Tech Voter Identification and Get-Out-The-Vote System to Survey over 1.5 Million Alabama Homes September 10, 2003 - Herndon, VA - Yesterday, Election Research participated in an astounding victory over a proposed $1.2 billion tax increase in Alabama, which had the strong support of Governor Bob Riley. In a ballot referendum that saw 53% of registered voters go to the polls (far larger than the 45% who voted in a similar measure on a state lottery four years ago) a whopping 68% voted “No” on the tax increase, which would have been the largest tax increase in state history. “We targeted all 1.5 million households in the state with six different surveys,” said Election Research President Gabriel S. Joseph. “Of those we had over 571,000 live responses and a full 221,000 who answered at least one question in our survey, with 10.32% completing the entire survey. Those are huge numbers for such an undertaking and clearly show the degree of enthusiasm in Alabama over the ballot referendum.” Of the constituents surveyed by Election Research 72% were against the tax. In addition, 91% of Anti-Tax registered voters, pledged to come out and vote against the tax increase. Alabama constituents let their preferences be known loud and clear against tax hikes. “When we started calling we were told the measure was polling at 50-50,” said Joseph, “but by the time we had finished, we knew the tax would go down to sound defeat. Election Research is thrilled at these results.” “This proves again that old-fashioned voter identification and getting those voters to the polls still is the most effective means of winning elections,” said Joseph. “Previously, this could have been done only by using live callers. But we’ve automated it, making the process far more efficient and cost-effective, which saves the candidates invaluable time and much-needed funds.” “It was an Anti-Tax day in America and Election Research was there to serve. Any state considering tax increases should look at the Alabama results and take note,” Joseph concluded.
